The Government of Kenya has officially launched the Enhancing Soil Health and Agroecology in KCEP-CRAL (KCEP-CRAL Soil/ILSA) Action, an EU-funded programme implemented by the Government of Kenya to promote sustainable agriculture and soil health.

The Action, supported through an EU grant of EUR 4.3 million, targets 40,000 smallholder farmers across Embu, Kakamega, Kilifi, Makueni, Taita Taveta, and Trans Nzoia counties, focus on promoting agroecological practices, for improved food, nutrition security,climate resilience.

The launch event in Kakamega featured 60 exhibition stands and drew 400 farmers, including 250 from Lugari, 50 each from Likuyani, Malava, and Navakholo. Exhibits showcased climate-smart technologies, bio-fertilizers, bio-pesticides, and sustainable farming innovations. Several KALRO centres participated, including Embu, Mtwapa, NARL, Kabete, Kitale, Alupe, Busia, Kakamega, and KALRO Headquarters. National institutions such as the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) and the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) were also represented.

Speaking on behalf of the Principal Secretary, State Department for Agriculture, Secretary Administration, Mr. Harun Khator reaffirmed the government’s commitment on upscaling agroecological technologies nationwide. Kakamega County CEC for Agriculture, Mr. Morphat Mandela, emphasized County support for farmer-centered climate solutions.

The action financier the European Union reaffirmed its continued commitment to the Government of Kenya. While IFAD Country Director, Ms. Mariatu Kamara, highlighted the Action goal in strengthening rural livelihoods. Representatives from the National Treasury pointed out the prudent management of resources recieved. The KCEP-CRAL Soil/ILSA Action will be implemented through farmer learning centres, advisory services, access to agroecological inputs through digital e-voucher systems, and investment on policy support to strengthen Kenya’s food systems and climate resilience.
