The government and the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) have launched a nationwide Trade Test Assessment to tackle youth unemployment by equipping over 25,000 young Kenyans with essential vocational skills.

The initiative, set to be conducted across approximately 250 centers nationwide, marks a significant step in addressing the country’s employment challenges.

Speaking at the launch event at Voi Vocational Training Center, Principal Secretary for Labour and Skills Development, Shadrack Mwadime, emphasized the importance of practical skills over traditional academics.

“It’s not just about university degrees; it’s about ensuring every young Kenyan has the skills needed to earn a living,” Mwadime said, highlighting vocational training as crucial for economic growth.

This initiative aligns with President William Ruto’s vision of empowering youth through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Mwadime also announced plans to establish Incubation Centers near VTCs nationwide, providing graduates with hands-on experience in finance and enterprise management to prepare them for both entrepreneurship and employment.

NITA Chairman Aden Noor Ali commended the assessors for their critical role in nurturing talent, reiterating NITA’s commitment to aligning vocational skills with labor market demands.

The ongoing August Trade Test will cover 46 counties, with higher participation expected in the December assessment.

Taita Taveta County Governor Andrew Mwadime welcomed the initiative, urging the county’s youth to seize the opportunities offered by vocational training. He cited the success of local youths in securing employment through similar programs and encouraged more enrollments in VTCs.
