Kishushe Ranch, situated in Wundanyi Sub- County, Taita Taveta County, is rich in iron ore deposits. While this mineral wealth has attracted significant investment, it has also led to a series of disputes and challenges affecting the local community.
The Kishushe Ranching Cooperative Society Ltd, has been at the center of conflicts with mining companies operating in the area. There are highlighted issues such as non-inclusivity in decision-making, conflicting land claims, and delayed enjoyment of land rights among local communities. These challenges have been particularly evident in Kishushe, where land disputes remain unresolved, affecting the community’s ability to utilize their land for subsistence or economic purposes.
The local community has expressed frustration over the lack of tangible benefits from the mining operations. Despite the area’s mineral wealth, residents continue to face poverty, lack of basic amenities like piped water, and inadequate infrastructure. The community’s demand for fair compensation and adherence to agreements remains a central issue.
“Investors cannot start working without a license. We have already given them our consent. We ask the Minister of mining to help us get those licenses fast, we depend on the mines as our source of livelihood,” said Matilda Waleghwa.
“We don’t want any investor in our ranch without our consent. That is unlawful and we will not accept it. We want the Minister of Mining to take responsibility and put corruption in our ranch to an end,” said Chombo Shete, chairman of the board of Kishushe Ranching Cooperative Society Ltd.
The locals claim that they were given 30 million shillings by the government but they have yet to receive it.
“We were given 30million shillings but we don’t know where it went and it was supposed to be given to our community. We want that money to be given to us,” said Mary Vigilance.
In conclusion, while Kishushe Ranch holds significant mineral resources, the benefits have not been equitably shared with the local community.
