The Duruma community in Kwale County has appointed Patrick Kamanza Mchinga as its new spokesperson, marking a significant leadership transition for the community.
The decision follows a formal announcement by the former Duruma community spokesperson and former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) chairman, Mudzo Nzili, who declared his intention to venture into active politics.
His move prompted the community to initiate consultations, which culminated in the appointment of Patrick Kamanza Mchinga to take over the role.
Speaking after his confirmation, Patrick said his primary mandate would be to safeguard the interests of the Duruma community and advocate for its rights.
He noted that despite the community’s rich cultural heritage and contribution to national development, the Duruma people have for a long time lacked adequate recognition, particularly at the national level.
“My responsibility is to ensure that the voice of the Duruma community is heard, respected, and included in decision-making processes. For many years, our concerns have remained on the periphery, and it is time we address this through constructive engagement,” Patrick said.
He expressed gratitude to the Duruma community for the trust placed in him, describing the appointment as both an honour and a heavy responsibility.
Patrick pledged to serve all members of the community with fairness, unity, and inclusivity, without discrimination.
He further emphasized that the Duruma community is not aligned with any political party and will not be drawn into partisan politics.
Instead, he said the community would work closely with both county and national governments to promote development, improve access to essential services, preserve cultural identity, and enhance the overall socio-economic wellbeing of the Duruma people.
Meanwhile, the outgoing spokesperson, Mudzo Nzili, is yet to announce the political party under which he will contest or the position he seeks. However, he assured the community of his continued support and commitment to ensuring the Duruma community benefits from development initiatives.
